In the first agreement of its kind from the region, the Costa Rican National Standards Body El Instituto de Normas Técnicas de Costa Rica (INTECO) and the IEEE have signed a standards adoption agreement. The agreement, which enables INTECO to adopt and promote the use of IEEE standards in Costa Rica, is based upon fostering international technical collaboration fundamental to global technological infrastructure development. INTECO will have access to IEEE standards in its ongoing efforts to foster technological development in Costa Rica, spur economic growth, and create new employment opportunities in the country.

“This standards adoption agreement, whereby INTECO can request IEEE standards for translation and adoption as national standards in Costa Rica, is a milestone for the region,” said Mary Lynne Nielsen, director of IEEE Standards Association Business Operations. “It’s encouraging to see a national standards body from a Central American country proactively pursue technological development and economic growth through the utilization of IEEE globally accepted standards, and we look forward to our ongoing collaborative arrangement with INTECO.”

“The signing of this agreement allows Costa Rica to access new technologies and be at the forefront of new applications and global trends,” said Mauricio Céspedes Mirabelli, executive director of INTECO. “The knowledge that is seen through IEEE standards translates into support for sector competition and creation of conditions that guarantee a better quality of life for the inhabitants of the country, to achieve greater awareness regarding the quality that must be required in products, services, designs, and installations.”
